Navigating the Job Market as a Mature Graduate: A Personal Journey

In the vibrant city of Shah Alam, I recently celebrated a significant milestone: obtaining my graphic design degree from MSU Shah Alam. This achievement, however, was accompanied by an unexpected challenge.

Despite submitting over 700–plus job applications, I received only three responses —two outright rejections and one interview that culminated in the revelation that the position was for a junior designer, a detail conspicuously absent from the job listing.

This experience, while disheartening, is not unique. Ageism in the Malaysian job market is a pervasive issue, with many companies imposing age limits that exclude candidates over 40. This practice overlooks the wealth of experience and wisdom that mature candidates bring to the table.

The Reality of Ageism in Malaysia

Research by the Malaysian Research Institute on Ageing (MyAgeing) at Universiti Putra Malaysia found that many companies are reluctant to hire seniors, with some job advertisements frequently excluding candidates over 40. This reluctance stems from entrenched stereotypes that question the adaptability and technological proficiency of older workers.

A survey by LinkedIn revealed that 45% of Boomers (aged 55 to 65) and 33% of Gen Xers (aged 39 to 54) feel that age is a significant barrier to opportunities, as they struggle to keep up with new technological and automation changes in a rapidly developing world.Â

The Emotional Toll

The emotional impact of such widespread rejection cannot be understated. Each application submitted carries with it a fragment of hope, and each rejection chips away at one’s confidence. The silence from potential employers often feels like a dismissal of one’s entire professional journey and the skills honed over decades.

It’s essential to recognize the immense value that mature professionals offer. Our extensive experience translates into a deep understanding of industry nuances, refined problem-solving abilities, and a seasoned perspective that can guide teams through complex challenges. Moreover, our commitment to continuous learning ensures that we remain updated with the latest industry trends and technologies.

The Path Forward

While the journey has been fraught with challenges, it has also been a period of introspection and growth. I have come to realize the importance of resilience and adaptability. Embracing new technologies, expanding my professional network, and seeking opportunities in organizations that value diversity and experience have become integral to my strategy.

To employers, I urge a reevaluation of hiring practices. Embracing a multigenerational workforce not only fosters diversity but also drives innovation. By recognizing the unique strengths that mature professionals bring, companies can harness a wealth of knowledge and experience that can propel their organizations forward.

My journey is a testament to the challenges faced by many mature graduates in today’s job market. However, it also highlights the resilience and determination that define us. By acknowledging the value of experience and advocating for inclusive hiring practices, we can pave the way for a more equitable and dynamic workforce.
